Watching an elephant family dusting themselves on a hot day in the shade in the northern Kruger Park An elephant can lift a tree with its trunk, or run around, knock things over, and throw dirt. But is there a good explanation for why elephants like throwing dirt on themselves, and for all these other strange activities? In fact, almost everything an elephant does is related to staying healthy and protecting themselves against the elements. An elephant is one of the most fascinating animals in the world. They are known for their size and their intelligence, and social behaviors. The dirt acts as a barrier between the elephant’s skin and the insects. This is especially important in areas where there are a lot of biting insects, such as mosquitoes. Another reason for this behavior is sun protection. Elephants, like humans, can suffer from sunburn and skin damage if they aren’t careful. You may have noticed that elephants prefer to do this when the sun is at its highest. It is also believed that elephants use mud baths as a way to cool down. When it’s hot, the mud can act as a sort of natural sunscreen and heat protector, and when it’s cold, the mud bath can keep the elephant’s skin warm. Every time an impressive moment when a huge mail lion starts his calling !!! Lions will use their roar to ward off potential intruders, and/or to protect their territory and their pride. Sometimes they'll even roar as a way of talking with other lions, and their roars can reach up to 114 decibels—the same noise level as a chainsaw or a snowmobile. Roars can be heard from over several kilometers away when conditions are right. The sound is even more impressive when this close and you can feel the vibrations through your entire body. Please subscribe to this free wildlife channel if you like this video. The Flehmen response takes place when one lion, of either sex, sniffs and smells the urine of another. Chemicals and hormones contained in the urine elicit the Flehmen response. Usually, after smelling the urine patch on the ground or vegetation, the cat that is doing the smelling will lift his or her head, and hold their lips back in a strong grimace for a period of several seconds. If you have never seen it happen before, it can appear to be a threat display, but in fact it has nothing to do with threat. Each cat has a vomeronasal organ (also sometimes called the organ of Jacobson) located above the palate. By sniffing deeply, and then pulling back their lips, they are in fact ‘testing’ the chemical content of the urine left behind by the earlier animal. Also, because lions are social for much of the time, it is easier to observe the Flehmen response taking place amongst members of the same pride. Although Flehmen is observed amongst males and females, it appears to be most important to males and it plays a part in allowing them to determine whether a female may be entering an oestrous cycle. Wild dog pups get food at the den Etymology and naming of wilddogs: The English language has several names for the African wild dog, including African hunting dog, Cape hunting dog, painted hunting dog, painted dog, painted wolf and painted lycaon. Though the name "African wild dog" is widely used "wild dog" is thought by conservation groups to have negative connotations that could be detrimental to its image; one organisation promotes the name "painted wolf", while the name "painted dog" has been found to be the most likely to counteract negative perceptions. Like other canids, the African wild dog regurgitates food for its young, but also extends this action to adults, as a central part of the pack's social unit. The young have the privilege to feed first on carcasses. The African wild dog has been respected in several hunter-gatherer societies, particularly those of the San people and Prehistoric Egypt. Our precious guests saw this happy rhino family yesterday while enjoying their game drive. So good to see these wonderful prehistoric animals still roaming around. One of the few places where your changes are pretty big to see these enormous animals is in Kenya. Due to poaching of this magnificent animal the numbers were plumbing rapidly but there is some light at the end of the tunnel because in some places the rhino population slowly increases again. All this can only be realised due to the very very brave local rangers who are protecting this awesome animal.
